Welcome Picnic kicks off 40th Birthday Celebrations

The P&C organised a School Welcome Picnic on 15 February 2013 as an opportunity for all families to meet at the start of the year and for the school to kickstart its 40th Birthday celebrations.

The kids enjoyed playing in the twilight while parents made and renewed friendships. School Principal Kim Darcy cut the birthday cake with an audience of interested youngsters looking on.

Keep an eye on the school newsletter and P&C Calendar for details of the celebrations planned for later in the year including a Community Picnic Day.

ACT Government decision to use Relocatable Classrooms

Duffy Primary is growing. Houses are being built in the new suburbs of Wright and Coombes and with the opening of a new primary school in Coombes postponed until 2015, Duffy can expect further increases in enrolments for some years.

Plans to extend Duffy using designs consistent with the current buildings were drawn up by the Education Directorate, but in late March 2012 it came to the attention of the School Board that the Government was about to consider using relocatable buildings instead. At very short notice the Board wrote in early April 2012 to both the Chief Minister and the Minister for Education expressing concern about the compatibility of relocatable buildings with the open-plan classroom design and associated approaches to teaching at Duffy.

The possible use of relocatable buidings was also discussed at the 15 May 2012 P&C meeting, and it was agreed that the P&C should also write expressing concern. Letter to Government regarding decision to use relocatable buildings.Adobe pdf file

On 5 June 2012, the ACT Budget included a $2.8 million project to increase capacity at Duffy Primary School, through the use of relocatable buildings to meet increased demand within the Weston Creek area. View Page 192 of Budget Paper 3Adobe pdf file

Investigation of options for the School Canteen

In past years the P&C has organised the canteen, however the canteen is not currently operating as there were too few people who could volunteer regularly. The School is investigating contracting a commercial company to provide a canteen service in 2013.
